patience: noun, to accept or tolerate delay, trouble or suffering without getting upset or angry.
Patience is something I am not very good at, but I am a work in progress. As I move through recovery after surgery, I am working at patience every day. Patience: for a new way to be active while healing, for understanding that daily living skills take me longer, for people who don't understand the surgical procedure and the healing process, and healing.
I have sat back (because I have so much time!) and watched as life moves on and see that as a society we are all impatient. But why? Why do we all have so much trouble tolerating delay? Maybe we could flip that thought and move toward living more in the moment, being present for our lives.
I will continue to work on patience, trying to live fully in the present, and maybe even enjoy the delay.

Recovery WODS
Yesterday:
walk 5 minutes on the treadmill
25 rowboats
4 rounds
Pretty much of a sissy workout? Yes? well, having just had surgery for a torn rotator cuff, I'm trying my best to get back to work and not lose that firebreather in me. Speaking of firebreathers, I'd like to write about one of my heros, who was also a firebreather: my father.
I'm sure CrossFit HQ has an official definition of 'firebreather'. My definition: one who approaches their goals in life with a passion that radiates from the heart. One who is passionate about their life.
My father and 10 reasons he lived his life as a firebreather and my hero:
1. He loved me from the tip of my head to the bottom of my toes and I felt it every day.
2. He played the concertina and sang "Whose Little girl are You" and "You are my Sunshine" to me with my dog, Bootsie, at my side.
3. He taught me about gardening and was 'green' long before the term was hip.
4. He taught me to look for deer at night while we would drive up north for vacations. I still look for those bright eyes in the darkness.
5. He helped me to fill a shopping bag with the most beautiful fall leaves even though he knew they would dry out and we would eventually toss them.
6. He also allowed me to pluck every stone I thought was an agate out of freezing Lake Superior and fill our trunk.
7. He was a firefighter.
8. I always thought he looked just like John Wayne.
9. He had an incredible work ethic. He believed in the importance of Catholic schools for his six children and would not accept charity.
10. He went to church every day. Now I am not a religious person (I actually feel let down by my Catholic faith)but his passion for his faith was clear.
Just one more: he would tell us at the dinner table, "I am Lord, God and master of this house." I believed him, fought against it, but eventually came to respect him for that. He was 'Lord, God and master.'
My dad passed away years ago. But I had the opportunity to tell him how much I loved him and I think about him almost every day. Especially during difficult WODs.
RIP dad.
More to come about my other firebreather hero: my brother, Jim.

Bounce! Bounce! Bounce! Explode
Double unders. My nemesis. But I wanted to do them, I had to do them. I tried and tried. Finally I found Buddy Lee.
http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_BuddyLeeIntroDoubleUnders.mov
I watched this video for days. I walked around saying, "Bounce, bounce, bounce, explode!" And then one day it happened. It was a cold early spring day and I was outside on our driveway shouting my bounce, bounce, bounce, explode mantra while jumping rope and it happened. I could not believe it. I actually linked three double unders! It felt like Christmas, my birthday, and Fourth of July in my heart and soul! I ran in the house to get my husband, Tommy, so that he could watch me and make sure the rope was really going under me twice to one jump. I hit one of my goals.
First hand stand push ups, now double unders. I owned my life, I could do what I put my mind to doing. I could. Do you own your life? Do you set goals and work on them until you achieve them? It is the sweetness of life...take it!

The Blabbering Begins
First, let me give a shout out to my two heros and role models: Lizbeth at http://crossfitlisbeth.com and Melissa at http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.blogspot.com. These two CrossFitting women are smart, strong, and fit and I read their blogs daily for inspiration and smiles. Their blogs have given me the courage to begin my own mouthing off. Not that I think anyone will listen, more of putting down in words what is in my heart. I guess I will apply the 3, 2, 1, go! attitude.......
So, I found CrossFit about a year ago. My trainer and friend starting to talk to me about it and once I started, I was hooked. It made me feel strong and badass at my age and that was what hooked me: a handstand push up? Are you kidding me? But I did it and immediately came home to show my husband, marking up our newly painted wall with my shoes.
Slowly, I added new experiences to my repertoire and realized what a kickass workout CrossFit gave me. I started following the main site and joined the world of the Journal. I constantly watched videos and wanted to jump rope like Buddy Lee. My goal: double unders.
More to come....
P.S. My board name and alter ego is Bo.
